Emerging technological advancements and globalisation have intensified the need for a highly developed skill force. India’s workforce, 70% of which is employed only in the informal sector, faces several socioeconomic hardships due to restricted access to education/ training programs, lack of adequate skills, and limited employment. This report aims to study the current skill capacity, challenges when it comes to developing training initiatives, structural barriers, mobility patterns, and an overview of the macroeconomic conditions of the low-income workers. After examining the secondary literature, we built a programme (website) that will integrate all the requirements of the workers and help them with real-time upskilling of their skills.
The low-skilled worker economy in India has resulted in a workforce that frequently enters employment without structured skill development, formal training, or exposure to essential workplace skills. Many low-skilled workers depend on temporary or task-based roles in sectors such as delivery services, food handling, retail assistance, and hospitality etc. These workers are often excluded from conventional opportunities for training and professional advancement. The lack of accessible learning infrastructure hinders their upward mobility and limits their ability to increase earnings or transition into higher-skilled positions. SkillBridge seeks to address these challenges by providing an efficient digital platform where workers can acquire practical skills despite their irregular daily work environments. The platform is designed to deliver accessible, targeted training that aligns with pertinent skills required for them to transition into higher-paying formal jobs.
